Over the past couple of days, I had an incredibly insightful experience at the museum. My primary goal was to delve deeper into the specimens and collections to gather essential information for my thesis project illustrations. This visit proved to be invaluable in helping me progress with my work.
One of the highlights of my trip was sketching the dioramas representing four distinct biomes. Since the gallery is closed to the public on Mondays during the winter, I appreciated the quiet space to document my observations. During this time, I discovered several species not included in the dioramas but mentioned in the accompanying information panels. For my illustrations, I strive to present information as accurately as possible, ensuring that what the audience sees in the dioramas aligns with the details provided on the boards.
In addition to the gallery dioramas, I explored the Clore Natural History Centre, where I documented various species and displays. I also assisted my external advisor in organising bird study skins and arranging them in drawers for public viewing. These drawers serve an educational, purpose, helping to inform visitors about the species in the collection and the vast mysteries of the natural world. The centre showcases a wide range of topics, from zoology to entomology and botany, creating a rich learning environment. However, it lacks visual aids, which is where I hope to contribute. My goal is to create comparative illustrations that connect with the specimens on display, documenting their stories and highlighting the beauty of these animals.
On top of that, I had the opportunity to explore the vertebrate collections, photographing and measuring species for my illustrations. This hands-on experience allowed me to ensure that my reconstructions would be as accurate as possible. Spending time with my external advisor was particularly rewarding, as I witnessed her work as a curator and observed how other researchers interact with the museum's collections.
Overall, this trip was immensely beneficial. It has provided me with guidance and inspiration, setting me on the right path to progress with my outlined illustrations. I'm excited to translate these observations into my work and share the beauty of the natural world with others.
